Electron-beam manipulation of covalently bound materials

Focused electron irradiation directed with atomic precision can manipulate covalently bound impurity atoms in crystal lattices.

Atomic-level control of materials is the ultimate limit for engineering their properties. As originally discovered by the group, focused electron irradiation that can be directed with atomic precision is able to manipulate covalently bound impurity atoms in crystal lattices including graphene and silicon.
