Abstract

Changes in strength related to the release of the hydrostatic pressure after high pressure torsion deformation of Cu and Ni were studied by cooling the sample before releasing the pressure, and hardness measurement before and after warming-up to room temperature. A considerable loss in strength could be detected in parallel to the recently found microstructural changes. This findings confirm the crucial role of the hydrostatic pressure component during severe plastic deformation.
