Impurity and defect engineering of materials

Introducing point defects such as vacancies and impurity atoms allow tailoring material properties.

Influence of point defects on materials range from thermal and mechanical properties to the possibility of creating single-atom catalysts and photon emitters and quantum centers in insulating materials. Possible applications range from effective catalysts to quantum information technology and quantum computing.
